History of Boksburg
Boksburg, founded in 1887, is one of South Africa's oldest towns, developed after gold was discovered in the Witwatersrand. Named after Eduard Bok, the state secretary of the South African Republic, it initially thrived as a mining town.
Boksburg became one of the key towns in the early gold mining industry, linked by the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek’s (ZAR) first railway line, which connected Boksburg to Germiston and the main reef goldfields.
Gold and coal mining played major roles in its early development. With the decline of mining, the town diversified into manufacturing and later retail and logistics.
The Boksburg Lake, created in 1889, was essential for transporting goods and remains a central landmark. Over time, Boksburg diversified its economy with industries like manufacturing and commerce. Today, it’s a significant part of the Gauteng province, known for its historic sites, parks, and shopping hubs, blending heritage with modern amenities.
