DESIGN CENTER IN GREENSIDE
Our vision is to be the leaders in design education empowering our students for the real world.
The degree programmes offered are grounded in a strong research base and this will ensure that our programmes remain at the forefront of design education.
At the Greenside Design Center we strongly encourage commitment to social responsibility through forging partnerships with the design industry, education institutions and community at large.
FACILITIES
COMPUTER ROOMS
Greenside Design Center boasts state of the art computer rooms with industry related hard and software for each discipline. Computer rooms are equipped with the necessary accessories, such as printers and scanners.
LIBRARY
Design Center has an excellent specialist design library with over 2000 books, journals, periodicals and magazines. Inter-library searches and requests is also available, and GDC has recently subscribed to the J-Stor database.
SOUNDROOM
The soundroom is available to 3rd and 5th year Multimedia students and is fitted with state of the art technologies for sound editing.
TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT
Design Center offers the use of various technical equipment to both staff members for course delivery, and students for projects and presentations. The equipment includes various cameras; a VCR and television; DVD player; epidiascope; slide projectors; overhead projectors and AV projectors.
COURSES OFFERED HERE:
MULTIMEDIA
What is it? Multimedia is a relatively new field of study and is very much on the cutting edge of technological and industry developments. The communication aspects of Multimedia are determined by the visual, typographic, layout and illustrative elements of the design. At Design Center the emphasis is on the design aspects of Multimedia with some training in the technical programming. This field includes hand rendered and digital animation, computer graphics, storyboarding, digital interface and web design, motion graphics and design for television.
INTERIOR
What is it? Interior Design is concerned with the functional, aesthetic, and socially responsible design of public and private spaces. A good understanding of the appropriate technologies and construction methods are required. Design solutions are developed within a socially relevant context. This includes design schemes for leisure and recreation, business, retail, exhibition and residential environments. Previous graduates are sought after in industry, and the range of careers is varied and interesting. Many are working in interior design or architectural practices. Others have joined the design teams of large corporations, government departments and retail chains.
DESIGN PLUS
What is it? Greenside Design Center also offers a one year DesignPlus that targets applicants who do not meet the admission criteria into the BA Degree programmes. The course is a one year course which is aimed at enhancing critical and creative thinking in the design context. Emphasis is also placed on improving written communication skills. The course aims to provide an understanding of broad based design problems where learners can develop basic skills in a variety of design fields. On successful completion of this programme learners are eligible to apply for entry into the BA Degree programmes.
SHORT COURSES
REVIT SHORT COURSE
As from January 2007 the Greenside Design Center will be offering short courses in Revit.
Revit is an essential component of interior design and is used to produce working drawings as well as photo-real presentation images.
ABOUT THE TUTOR
Benjamin Modimoeng, one of Design Center’s computer tutors has an architectural background with many years experience in the industry. His knowledge of the Autodesk Revit is from working with the software for three years as a Draughtsman, producing working drawings and 3D specialist producing photo-real presentation images.
COURSE OBJECTIVE- FUNDAMENTALS
After completing the course you will be able to produce working drawings with proper documentation. i.e
* Create and modify different types of walls, doors and windows
* Create and use dimensions and constraints to control object positioning
* Create and use curtain walls, floors, ceilings, roofs and railing
* Load, place and modify component families
* Creating schedule
* Create callouts, detail views and drafting views
* Create sections views, drawing sheets, modify title-blocks, control object’s visibility and line weights.
NEW KITCHEN DESIGN COURSE
The Kitchen Specialist Association (KSA) has partnered with the Greenside Design Center (GDC) to run a design course specifically tailored to the needs of the kitchen industry.
